A lean and cleaner production benchmarking method for sustainability assessment: A study of manufacturing companies in Brazil

Abstract: A constant evolution in the efficiency of production systems and government policies has enabled the control of the environmental impact of production activities and encouraged companies to develop strategies to achieve more sustainable operations. Despite this, more needs to be done to reduce the risks of globalised production activities. In this context, evidence suggests that Lean Manufacturing (LM) and Cleaner Production (CP) make a positive contribution to the environmental performance of organisations. H… Show more

“…The government's policies of environmental regulations will inevitably increase the environmental costs of enterprises, accelerate the exit of high-pollution and energy-intensive enterprises, and promote green enterprises to occupy more market share [42]. As early as the end of the 20th century, Porter and Van der Linde (1995) pointed out that reasonable environmental regulations can stimulate enterprises to optimize resource allocation efficiency and improve technology level, and stimulate the "innovation compensation" effect of enterprises [43].…”

“…Several studies have recognized the environmental advantages of lean practices by saving resources and energy [17,36,37]. In this regard, different examples of the lean tools are: total productive maintenance (TPM), Kaizen, 5S (seiri, seiton, seiso, seiketsu, shitsuke), value stream mapping (VSM), cellular manufacturing (CM), just-in-time (JIT), single minute exchange of die (SMED), visual management, and work standardization which have been utilized to enhance the environmental performance [13,17,38].…”

“…Environmental sustainability was not among the purposes of the proposed framework. Ramos et al, (2018) were also among the researchers who studied sustainability performance benchmarking methodologies [329]. The lean cleaner production benchmarking (LCPB) method was proposed by authors of the study to assess and promote cleaner production to improve mainly environmental performance.…”
