“…The abnormal fraction which appeared between the chylomicron and LDL fractions in lipoprotein electrophoresis might be suspected of being lipoprotein X (Lp-X) [47], which has been reported in patients with cholestatic liver diseases [11,33,44], patients with a deficiency of lecithin/cholesterol acyltransferase (LCAT) [16,36,48] and during intravenous infusion of fat emulsions [2,50,51]. Lp-X is a bilayer vesicle of phospholipids (51-66%) and free cholesterol (22-30%) and contains a small amount of proteins essentially including albumin and apoCs but also including apoE and apoAI [2,16,33,35,36,39,44,48].…”

“…In the group of biliary atresia, serum levels of total cholesterol and phospholipids were increased and the levels of the latter were correlated to the Lp-X levels determined by a semiquan titative assay. The fact that the major components of Lp-X are unesterified cholesterol (22%) and phospholipids (66%) (Seidel et al 1969) may provide a reason for correlation between Lp-X and phospholipid levels. However, in Lp-X positive infants with neonatal hepatitis, its level was not related to the values of serum cholesterol or phospholipids; these values were not different from those in Lp-X negative infants with the illness.…”

“…serum Recently, lipoprotein-X (Lp-X) which is an abnormal lipoprotein appearing in the serum of obstructive jaundice has been shown to be a reliable parameter of cholestasis (Seidel et al 1969(Seidel et al , 1973a. Since its detection methods are simple and easy, the Lp-X test would be useful as an initial diagnostic tool in obstructive jaundice in early infancy.…”

“…These are complexes mainly of phospholipid, unesterified cholesterol and VLDL apoproteins (the delipidated proteins from VLDL, see below) that form in patients with obstructive liver disease. The lipoprotein is separable by Cohn-fractionation and is identified by an antibody that also reacts with apo-VLDL (Seidel et al, 1969). The accompanying lipoprotein pattern is variable.…”
