The aim of this study was to assess the biochemical profile of tench blood plasma during preand postspawning period under the conditions of hormonally-induced artificial reproduction. A total of 59 females and 27 males were examined during the postspawning period of 1999 and 52 females and 25 males were examined during the prespawning period of 2000, as well as 48 females after reproduction. Biochemical indices determined in blood plasma were as follows: cortisol, glucose, total protein (TP), triacylglycerols (Tcg), cholesterol (Chol), transaminases (ALT and AST), creatine kinase (CK), alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and electrolytes (Na). In females in the pre-spawning period, higher values of TP (P < 0.05) and Tcg (P < 0.01) were found compared to males. Immediately after reproduction, males had higher TP (P < 0.01) and Chol (P < 0.01) than females. No significant sex-related differences were found in other indices under study. Higher values of glucose (P < 0.01), Tcg (P < 0.01), Chol (P < 0.05), AST (P < 0.01) and ALP (P < 0.01) were found for females after reproduction in June compared to values found in April, i.e. two months prior to reproduction. Differing water temperature (10.3 °C in April; 22 °C in June) associated with metabolic rate also played an important role. Induction of ovulation by GnRH synthetic analogue and carp pituitary was not successful in all females. However, between the spawned and unspawned female fish, differences were found in glucose concentration (P < 0.01) but non-significant differences were recorded for other biochemical indices. The blood plasma biochemical profile enabled to assess the state of internal milieu of broodstock during the reproduction period.

Résumé. -L'état physiologique des poissons a été estimé, pour une part, par l'évaluation mensuelle, au cours de quatre années (1984, 1989, 1990, 1991), de caractéristiques morphophysiologiques et de la composition somatique chez deux espèces différant par leur régime alimentaire : la perche et le gardon. Les valeurs obtenues ont démontré qu'il y a certaines années (1984, 1989), en été, un ralentissement de la croissance pondérale, une diminution ou un arrêt de l'accrétion protéique accompagné d'une modification de la concentration d'acides aminés ainsi qu'une chute de la teneur en lipides somatiques. Ces résultats indiquent nettement l'existence, dans la retenue de Pareloup, de conditions nutritionnelles plus ou moins favorables aux populations pisciaires, durant la période estivale. Par ailleurs, la détermination de paramètres sanguins, au cours d'un cycle annuel (1992)(1993), chez plusieurs espèces de poissons (brème, chevesne, brochet, sandre, perche) a révélé que si la valeur de l'hématocrite, la cholestérolémie, la triglycéridémie et la protéinémie sont, d'une manière générale, relativement stables, la glycémie varierait avec la photopériode et le taux d'insuline circulante serait en relation avec le cycle sexuel, pour la plupart des espèces.Mots-clés. -Poissons, retenue, composition somatique, paramètres sanguins.Abstract. -The physiological state of fish was first assessed by monthly evaluation in four years (1 984, 1989, 1990, 1991) of certain morphophysiological characteristics and of somatic composition in two species (perch and roach) with different dietary habits. In 1984 and 1989, a slowing down in weight gain, a decrease or an interruption in protein accretion associated with changes in amino acid contents, and a fall in somatic lipid levels were observed in summer. These results clearly point to dietary conditions 258 F. Vellas et al.in Pareloup Reservoir which are more or less favorable to fish populations during this period. In addition, blood parameter rneasurernents, carried out frorn 1992 to 1993 in various fish species (bream, chub, pike, pike-perch, perch), generally showed relatively unchanged values for hematocrit and plasma cholesterol, triglyceride and protein contents, while plasma glucose levels appeared dependent on the photoperiod and circulating insulin rates on the reproductive cycle, for most species.

Executive SummaryIn 199 1, the Pacific Northwest Laboratory (PNL) began studying water quality at several sites in the Yakima River Basin for the Bonneville Power Administration. These sites were being proposed as locations for fish culture facilities as part of the Yakima Fisheries Project (YFP). I.nformation on the quality of surface water and groundwater in the basin was needed to develop strategies for meeting artifical and natural production objectives of the YFP.Our studies indicate that surface water quality parameters near the proposed fish culture facilities are currently suitable for fish production, Water quality conditions in the mainstream Yakima River and its tributaries are generally excellent in the upper part of the watershed (i.e., near Cle Elum), but they are only fair to poor for the river downstream of Union Gap (river mile 107). Water quality of the Naches River near Oak Flats is also suitable for fish production.Groundwater supplies near the proposed fish production facilities typically have elevated concentrations of metals and dissolved gases. These conditions can be mitigated using best engineering practices such as precipitation and degasification. Additionally, mixing with surface water may improve these conditions. Depending on the location and depth of the well, groundwater temperatures may be warmer than optimum for acclimating and holding juvenile and adult fish. This condition may require that chillers be operated during the late summer holding periods. Additionally, planned water use requirements of some sites (i.e., Oak Flats and Nelson Springs) exceed the capacity of groundwater wells currently drilled at the sites. Thus, additional wells would be required or water requirements for fish culture activities would have to be modified.Water quality parameters measured in the Yakima River and tributaries sometimes exceed the range of values described as acceptable for culture of salmonids and for the protection of other aquatic life. However, constituent concentrations are within ranges that exist in many northwest fish hatcheries. Additionally, site-specific tests conducted by PNL (i.e., live box exposures and egg incubation studies) indicate that fish can be successfully reared in surface and well water near the proposed facility sites. Thus, there appear to be no constraints to artificial production for the YFP. However, studies by the U.S. Geological Survey and others suggest that water quality and excessive temperature in the lower Yakima River downstream from Prosser may limit natural production of some stocks of salmonids. The principal reasons for decreased water quality in the lower Yakima River include the relatively high volume of irrigation return flow.A monitoring and evaluation plan should be developed for the YFP that includes water quality measurements of water sources used for fish production and biological measures of fitness.
