A Low-Cost Miniature Electrohydrostatic Actuator System

Abstract: Hydraulic linear actuators dominate in high power applications but are much less common in low power (<100 W) systems. One reason for this is the cost: electric actuators in this power range generally exhibit lower performance but are also much less expensive than hydraulic systems. However, in recent years, some miniature hydraulic components have been mass produced, driving down prices. This paper presents the application of these low-cost components, together with a novel very low-cost 3D-printed valve t… Show more

“…This valve connects the cylinder port with the lower pressure to the lowpressure supply. For testing purposes, this low pressure was supplied by an external pump, but it is believed that it would be possible for this to be replaced with a reservoir or accumulator [13]. The valve casing was 3D-printed from polyethylene terephthalate glycol-modified (PETG) using a Prusa i3 mk3 fused filament printer, at a layer height of 0.10 mm and 100% infill.…”

“…Considering drive and systems technology based on variable-speed displacement units, major focus has been placed on their application to differential cylinders for use in both industrial and mobile applications, with special emphasis on standalone cylinder drives, and the handling of the volume asymmetry in various ways. Here, developments encompassing single displacement unit drives [16][17][18][19][20][21][22][23], dual displacement unit drives [24][25][26][27][28][29] and even triple displacement unit drives [30][31][32], all utilizing a single electric motor have been considered. Furthermore, dual displacement unit drives with two motors have also been considered [33][34][35][36][37].…”

“…28 Printing of complex, light hydraulic parts became a reality in much less time than before. As an example, Wiens and Deibert 29 presented a miniature hydraulic actuator with a low-cost 3D-printed valve. It was able to produce high force density and is cheaper in cost than other similar electric actuators.…”
