A Low Cost PMU to Monitor Distribution Grids

Abstract: Phasor Measurement Units have become more and more interesting for monitoring applications in distribution grids. For a large exploitation in medium and low voltage networks, however, a limited cost is required. Such specification, however, should not impact excessively the accuracy requirements, as it is expected that automatic control functionalities will run based on state estimation algorithms, which can be fed by PMU information. In this paper the design of a low cost PMU for distribution grids is propose… Show more

“…The decrease in their cost is clearly one of the leverages to allow a widespread installation of PMUs. In this perspective, several research projects are dealing with the design of low-cost PMU-like devices that are designed on embedded platforms; this may enable their diffusion even at LV level [41][42][43]. From a metrological viewpoint, PMUs conceived for SDN applications must comply with different requirements than classic PMUs for transmission systems since lower voltage drops and phase-angle differences are concerned.…”

“…While this would be prohibitively expensive at present PMU prices, as costs decrease we expect such a setup to become more and more realistic and µPMUs to become widespread for different applications [30]. Currently, different research projects are ongoing to design low-cost PMUs [31], [32] and the aim is a pervasive installation in DN [33]. In the tests, every branch is considered to be monitored by only one PMU, as in previous sections, and all the measurements are referred to the same timescale, since PMU time-tags allow alignment.…”

“…In order to implement the compensation technique described at the end of Section II, it is essential to characterize first the four error sources defined in (15). The methodology approach followed for the analysis of each source is discussed for sake of clarity in separate subsections.…”

“…Its versatility emerges for instance from its adoption for educational purposes: for example, in conjunction with Matlab Simulink blocks, it is used to propose laboratory exercises on PMU algorithms for undergraduate students in UK and Mexico [14]. A concrete application of a RPi as fully functional PMU was introduced with the LoCo PMU [15], where the authors present a low-cost device that integrates an external DAQ board and a GPS module. The solution to the synchronization problem consists in this case in the direct triggering of the DAQ acquisition by using the PPS from the GPS module.…”
