A manufacturability advisor for spun and rollformed sheet metal components

Abstract: In today's manufacturing scenario, accounting for manufacturability considerations at the product design stage is not an option but a necessity. When CAD/CAM tools are used to reduce design lead times, accounting for manufacturing process related considerations implicitly is often difficult. Availability of manufacturability advisor systems that analyze part geometry and other product related information for ease of manufacturing could be a solution to this problem. The purpose of a manufacturability assessmen… Show more

“…New product manufacturability has been approached from a variety of perspectives including engineering technical orientation (Ramana et al, 2006;Banerjee et al, 2007), the interactive manufacturing system optimization (Stoll, 1986;Xue, 1997;Park et al, 2002;Jiang and Hsu, 2003;Thimm and Lin, 2005), communication and human resource involvement (Smith and Offodile, 2008), concurrent engineering (McKnight and Jackson, 1989;Winner et al, 1988;Salhieh, 2008) and integrative design philosophy from idea generation to a finished product or services (Youssef, 1995;Lee and Saitou, 2002;Kim and Kim, 2009).…”

“…Statistically analysing the techniques used for building ES; it seems that among the most popular approaches (approx. 40%) used RBS (Scherer 1996;Myint 1998;Smith 1999;Arezoo 2000;Brissaud 2000;Chan 2003;Zha 2003;Jacob 2004;Korosec 2005;Giannakakis 2006;Howard 2006;Kumar 2006;Ramana 2006). RBSs use IF-THEN clauses with logical combinations to represent its knowledge base.…”

“…Most MAS reported to date consider only manufacturability aspects while sacrificing the functionality aspects in doing their assessment (Gupta 1995;Hayes 1996;Ong 2000;Jacob 2004;Ramana 2006).…”

“…There are several techniques that have been implemented to obtain data directly from CAD model such as: feature-based extraction system (Kamrani 1996;Gupta 1997;Brissaud 2000;Jacquel 2000;Jia 2004;Korosec 2005); neutral files usage (Yuyin 1996;Ramana 2006;Tomovic 2006); embedded algorithm into CAD system (Lee 1997); 3D recognition model based on the design specifications on the CAD model (Chen 2001). Even though, most of the developed MASs used feature-extraction system to obtain related data from CAD model but it has some problems.…”
