A meothod for multi-target range and velocity detection in automotive FMCW radar

Abstract: FMCW(Frequency Modulation Continuous Wave) radar has many useful applications but a serious problems can occur in multi-target situations. Range-velocity processing should suppress so-called ghost targets and detect missing targets presented by beat frequency shift with Doppler frequency. In this paper, a new method is proposed for effective identification of the correct pairs of beat frequencies received from real targets.

“…In this paper, we will exploit the Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave (FMCW) radar principle for dynamic wireless interrogation of the antenna sensor [14][15] . An FMCW signal is a frequency modulated signal whose frequency can be rapidly changed during measurement.…”

“…On the other hand, special waveforms can be designed for simultaneous range and velocity estimation at the cost of greatly increased complexity in system design and signal processing schemes [9][10][11]. For narrowband surveillance radar, more time can be saved for radar state transition from detection to tracking if the range and velocity of a target can be estimated with a single pulse.…”

“…In short distance condition, CW radar can provide accurate range and velocity information of the targets, which is used widely in no-contact measurement and in anti-collision radar [1]. However, in multi-targets condition, some ambiguity appears in range-velocity processing [1].…”

“…Although two-dimensional FFT algorithm can avoid the fuzzy beat-frequency matching [3], large computation quantity and low distance-velocity resolution influence the application in engineering. The earlier work [1] used classical trapezoidal wave as modulating waveform. Although the fuzzy degree is lower than triangle wave, it still can't accurately match the beat-frequency.…”
