“…Compared with colostrum and mature milk of mothers of preterm infants, transitional milk has lower ORP value indicating better TAC than colostrum or mature milk. Breast milk from mothers of preterm infants of 29–34 gestation weeks, collected up to 40 weeks of postnatal age showed a temporal change over the first 3 weeks of lactation, approaching zero with the achievement of term age . Our results indicate that TAC of transitional milk (according to ORAC value, up to 70% of TAC is in whey) is mainly due to the presence of vitamin C. Clausen et al .…”

“…Breast milk from mothers of preterm infants of 29-34 gestation weeks, collected up to 40 weeks of postnatal age showed a temporal change over the first 3 weeks of lactation, approaching zero with the achievement of term age. 26 Our results indicate that TAC of transitional milk (according to ORAC value, up to 70% of TAC is in whey) is mainly due to the presence of vitamin C. Clausen et al concluded that the number of significant contributors to milk radical scavenging activity is relatively low. 27 The TAC of milk does not correspond to the presence of peroxidation products in human milk, 28 also indicating that ORAC value may not be fully adequate as the representative of TAC in milk.…”

“…Metabolomic studies have been performed both on HM [ 5 , 37 , 93 , 94 , 95 , 96 , 97 , 98 ] and BM [ 35 , 99 , 100 , 101 , 102 ] that have also focused on metabolite changes during lactation [ 37 ]. HM metabolome, evaluated with nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR), has shown differences according to Gestational Age (GA), lactation phase [ 35 ], exposure to exogenous substances and it is different from BM and formula milk (FM).…”

“…Compared to the metabolites in preterm formula milk, the aqueous extracts of preterm HM were shown to have high lactose concentrations. The preterm formula milk, on the other hand, had a higher concentration of maltose [21,22]. The HM metabolome was further explored by Practico et al [23] with NMR spectroscopy.…”
