A method to eliminate unsprung adverse effect of in-wheel motor-driven vehicles

Abstract: In-wheel motor-driven vehicles are the development trend for future vehicles due to its high energy efficiency and low emission as well as its flexibility to achieve independent steering, driving, etc. However, the weighted wheel of in-wheel electric vehicles involves more unexpected unsprung vibrations, which imposes adverse effect on vehicle ride comfort. In addition, there exists an invariant point around the unsprung resonance frequency in both controlled and uncontrolled suspensions, which greatly limits … Show more

“…The sum of influences of each of the parameters (A, B, C, D) at all four possible levels (1. . .4) on the result quality η is 0, by (6). The influences of three parameter levels can vary and the influence of the fourth parameter level is adjusted for preservation of the sum of the four different influences at 0.…”

“…The most relevant obstacle for the widespread use of in-wheel motors is its unsprung mass [6]. Motors with some tens of kilograms of mass cannot qualify [7], but they can work perfectly elsewhere.…”

“…In another study by Nie and Zhuang 16 , the authors proposed a composed vehicle suspension and a TMD, which are both controlled by a semi-active sliding mode controller aiming to eliminate the unsprung adverse effect as well as improve the ride comfort across the whole frequency spectrum. The results indicated a significant reduction of a car body acceleration response in terms of RMS by 31.2% under sliding mode controller treatment.…”

“…Thus, in order to derive the visible performance of the passive TMD applied on the vehicle body, the greater mass of a TMD is required, which leads to an unacceptable for vehicles weighted system. Nie et al 31 proposed a new method to eliminate the unsprung adverse effect of the IEV, which is utilizing a sliding mode controller for both the suspension and the TMD. It was inferred based on the simulations under random road profile that the current approach allows to improve the ride comfort by 31% and road handling by 2.2%.…”
