A micro ultrasonic scalpel with modified stepped horn

Abstract: A transducer for a micro ultrasonic scalpel has been fabricated. The micro ultrasonic scalpel can be used with an endoscope for a nonabdominal operation or microsurgery, for example, through a microscope. The ultrasonic transducer is 9.8 mm long and 2.7 mm wide and has a stepped horn to amplify the vibration velocity; the tip of the horn is 0.6 mm wide. The scalpel operated at the resonance frequency in the longitudinal mode at 278 kHz. The piezoelectric material was lead zirconate titanate (PZT), which was de… Show more

“…Being attached to a catheter, the actuator radiated low-intensity ultrasound for detection of a biopsy needle tip under sonography. Likewise, to perform a non-abdominal operation or microsurgery, a micro ultrasonic scalpel was developed using PZT deposited through a hydrothermal method [190,191]. Pneumatic actuators shaped with soft and flexible elastomers are considered as one of the most suitable candidates for surgical device applications.…”

“…In order to deal with different types or different scenarios of surgery, reduce the difficulty of surgery, and reduce the risk of postoperative complications, scholars have made corresponding improvements and innovations based on their structural and functional characteristics. Kurosawa et al [14] designed a flat miniature ultrasonic scalpel transducer based on the piezoelectric ceramic drive mode, which can be used in microsurgery with endoscope for precise and subtle operation. Wakako et al [15] designed an ultrasonic scalpel transducer that can change the direction of vibration propagation by using a super-elastic nickel-titanium alloy wire as a waveguide, which can be applied to more complex surgical scenarios.…”

“…Representative perovskite materials such as Pb(Zr, Ti)O 3 -based and (Bi, K)TiO 3 -based materials have been successfully deposited by the hydrothermal method below 300 °C. [24][25][26][27][28] Among such materials, we focused on hydrothermally synthesized (K 0.88 Na 0.12 )NbO 3 films, which are reported to reach about 100 μm in thickness without cracking by repeating the deposition process. 29,30) Additionally, hydrothermally synthesized (K 0.88 Na 0.12 )NbO 3 films are reported to show relatively large e 31,f values and a selfpolarized state.…”
