A microdialysis technique for continuous subcutaneous glucose monitoring in diabetic patients (part 1)

Abstract: The performances and the stability of a novel subcutaneous glucose monitoring system have been evaluated. GlucoDay † (A. Menarini I.F.R. S.r.l, Florence Italy) is a portable instrument provided with a micro-pump and a biosensor coupled to a microdialysis system capable of recording the subcutaneous glucose level every 3 min. Long and short term stability of the biosensor are discussed and the results of some critical in vitro and in vivo (on rabbits) experiments are reported. A linear response up to 30 mM has … Show more

“…With the use of a validated continuous glucose-monitoring system (Maran et al, 2002;Poscia et al, 2003;Varalli et al, 2003;Maran et al, 2004;Wentholt et al, 2005), we assessed 24 h blood glucose concentrations in long-standing type 2 diabetes patients under strict dietary standardization but otherwise free-living conditions. Despite a healthy, balanced diet and the continued use of oral blood glucoselowering medication (ADA 2006), these type 2 diabetes patients showed substantial hyperglycemia throughout the greater part of the day.…”

“…Standard techniques such as immunoassays, gel electrophoresis and nuclear magnetic resonance typically cannot be performed in live cells and tissues, or at least they require preparation steps that inhibit real-time measurements [1]. Instead, electrochemical sensing based on oxidases is suitable for real-time monitoring of metabolites, such as glucose [2] and lactate [3].…”
