Here we evaluate an alternative protocol to histologically examine blood-brain barrier (BBB) breakdown, brain edema, and lesion volume following traumatic brain injury (TBI) in the same set of rodent brain samples. We further compare this novel histological technique to measurements determined by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and a neurological severity score (NSS). Sixty-six rats were randomly assigned to a sham-operated, mild TBI, moderate TBI, or severe TBI group. 48 h after TBI, NSS, MRI and histological techniques were performed to measure TBI severity outcome. Both the histological and MRI techniques were able to detect measurements of severity outcome, but histologically determined outcomes were more sensitive. The two most sensitive techniques for determining the degree of injury following TBI were NSS and histologically determined BBB breakdown. Our results demonstrate that BBB breakdown, brain edema, and lesion volume following TBI can be accurately measured by histological evaluation of the same set of brain samples.

This study was aimed at exploring the feasibility and clinical efficacy of nerve interventional thrombectomy (NIT) to treat occlusion of cranial artery M1 and M2 segments. 80 patients were selected and rolled into a control group (intravenous thrombolysis) and an experimental group (NIT). Patients’ vascular recanalization rates following therapy were compared, and the National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) was used to measure neurological function. The improvement in hemodynamics and the occurrence of adverse responses were compared. The results showed that the experimental group’s recanalization rate was up to 74.23%, which was significantly greater than the control group’s ( P < 0.05 ). One week after treatment, the neurological function scores in both groups decreased, and the score in the experimental group was only 15.23, which was much lower than that in the control group ( P < 0.05 ). The peak systolic flow rates of the basilar artery, internal carotid artery, and common carotid artery in the experimental group were 132 cm/s, 147 cm/s, and 114 cm/s, respectively, which were lower greatly than those in the control group ( P < 0.05 ). There was no significant difference in incidence of adverse reactions between the two groups ( P > 0.05 ). In summary, NIT showed a significant therapeutic effect on cranial artery occlusion of M1 and M2 segments, can dredge the occluded blood vessels, and effectively improve the neurological deficits of patients, showing reliable feasibility.

IntroductionGut microbiota dysbiosis is a key factor of the pathogenesis of post‐stroke depression (PSD). PSD is associated with increased hippocampal neuronal apoptosis and decreased synaptic connectivity. Inulin can be involved in hippocampal neuron protection through the microbiome–gut–brain axis. However, the neuroprotective effects of inulin in PSD are still to be further investigated.MethodsBy utilizing the GEO public database, we identify differentially expressed genes in the hippocampus following inulin intake. This can help us discover key signaling pathways through functional enrichment analysis. Furthermore, we validate the expression levels of signaling molecules in a rat model of PSD and examine the effects of inulin on behavioral changes and body weight. Additionally, conducting a microbiome analysis to identify significantly different microbial populations and perform correlation analysis.ResultsThe intake of inulin significantly up‐regulated mitogen‐activated protein kinase signaling pathway in the hippocampus. Inulin changed in the gut microbiota structure, leading to an increase in the abundance of Lactobacillus and Clostridium_sensu_stricto_1 in the intestines of PSD rats, while decreasing the abundance of Ruminococcus UCG_005, Prevotella_9, Oscillospiraceae, and Clostridia UCG_014. Furthermore, the inulin diet elevated levels of insulin‐like growth factor 1 in the serum, which showed a positive correlation with the abundance of Lactobacillus. Notably, the consumption of inulin‐enriched diet increased activity levels and preference for sugar water in PSD rats, while also reducing body weight.ConclusionThese findings highlight the potential therapeutic benefits of inulin in the management of depression and emphasize the importance of maintaining a healthy gut microbiota for PSD.
