Despite the abundant availability of Learning Objects as valuable teaching-learning tools, their use amongst teachers and college instructors is limited. An important reason for this is that instructors are not easily able to search and retrieve the LOs which map to their instructional goals. LO metadata only partially addresses this problem since existing metadata does not contain all the necessary pedagogy related information. In this paper we identify the pedagogical features of an LO, and use them to classify an LO for the appropriate instructional setting. We also test our classification scheme of LOs in electrical engineering domain available in the OSCAR LO repository. Lastly we suggest metadata tags based on these pedagogical features that LO repositories can use for search and retrieval of LOs for specific educational goals.

Lesson plan – an important methodological component of the learning process. Purpose of the article – analyze the current situation and suggest how information technology can assist the development of lesson plans, their accumulation and retrieval, thus ensuring their for effective application. The authors’ disclosures problems of lesson plans creation and its description and did comparative analysis of information and lesson plans templates which provided LO storages. The authors identified the main components of lesson plans and its description, which based are proposed the technology–based lesson plans templates and its description creation. This development of lesson plans and descriptions for educators will allowed re–use didactic resources (lesson plans) as an effective learning tool.

Metadata quality in digital repositories: Empirical results from the cross‐domain transfer of a quality assurance process

Metadata quality presents a challenge faced by many digital repositories. There is a variety of proposed quality assurance frameworks applied in repositories that are deployed in various contexts. Although studies report that there is an improvement of the quality of the metadata in many of the applications, the transfer of a successful approach from one application context to another has not been studied to a satisfactory extent. This article presents the empirical results of the application of a metadata quality assurance process that has been developed and successfully applied in an educational context (learning repositories) to 2 different application contexts to compare results with the previous application and assess its generalizability. More specifically, it reports results from the adaptation and application of this process in a library context (institutional repositories) and in a cultural context (digital cultural repositories). Initial empirical findings indicate that content providers seem to be gaining a better understanding of metadata when the proposed process is put in place and that the quality of the produced metadata records increases.
