A Modified Firefly Algorithm with Rapid Response Maximum Power Point Tracking for Photovoltaic Systems under Partial Shading Conditions

Abstract: A rapid response optimization technique for photovoltaic maximum power point tracking (MPPT) under partial shading conditions (PSCs) is proposed in this study. To improve the solar MPPT tracking speed for rapidly-changing environmental conditions and to prevent the conventional firefly algorithm (FA) from becoming trapped at the local peaks and oscillations during the search process, a novel fusion algorithm, named the modified firefly algorithm (MFA), is proposed. The MFA integrates and modifies the processes… Show more

“…The P-V characteristics of a PV system are nonlinear and are affected by both the ambient temperature and solar irradiance, which in turn reveal distinct MPPs. With the purpose of optimizing the use of PV systems, conventional MPPT algorithms are often used [12].…”

“…A PV source including a non-linear current-voltage I PV -V PV characteristic as shown in Figure 1A can be modeled by a current source, single-diode and resistors connected in series and parallel shown in Figure 1B and output current can be calculated using Kirchhoff 's current law as in Equation (1) (Huang et al, 2018;Norouzzadeh et al, 2019;Yousri et al, 2019;Zhu et al, 2019).…”

“…Many alterations were employed in conventional methods, and also numerous optimization algorithms were suggested by the literature such as PSO, genetic algorithm, gray wolf optimization technique, ABC, BA, FA, ALO algorithms, etc. However, all these algorithms also have some major drawbacks, let us say computational complexity, large search space, high cost, and sophisticated control structure and so on …”
