This paper presents an integrated education environment (IEE) developed for field-oriented controlled induction motor (IM). This educational environment helps students to develop knowledge about fieldoriented control algorithms for IM through the study of analysis and design. It also increases the effectiveness of the teaching of subjects. The control of IM using field-orientation methods is implemented on the DS1103 controller board from dSPACE. In the proposed IEE, the controller gains and other numerical parameters such as speed reference and d-axis current reference, etc. are easily adjusted through the developed graphical user interface (GUI) in dSPACE's ControlDesk environment. The output voltage and current waveforms and their harmonic spectra can be shown on the developed GUI and can also be stored as a MAT file.ß

A general purpose experimental set-up has been designed and implemented for students to carry out various experiments on inverters in the power electronics laboratories of universities, during a few hours of laboratory work. This is the first inverter setup that incorporates hardware and software control, as well as an optional user interface in a laboratory experimental set-up of a single multi-purpose inverter, thus making the system versatile and very practical for both undergraduate and graduate students. The system can be controlled either by a computer or through a liquid crystal display (LCD) and a keypad control unit, and it constitutes a low-cost alternative to relatively expensive commercial teaching sets. The computer provides a user friendly interface and easier control for laboratory environments equipped with computers. The LCD and keypad units eliminate the need for a computer, which makes this system usable in the laboratory as a standalone unit as well.

In this article, an integrated lab environment for the electrical engineering education is presented which includes hardware and software for the modeling, simulation and control of multilevel inverters. A five-level cascade inverter is designed and implemented which is an educational platform for the students to test different pulse width modulation (PWM) techniques and verify simulation results. The integrated environment is based on Matlab together with dSPACE. Sinusoidal PWM (SPWM) and Selected Harmonic Elimination PWM (SHEPWM) blocks are constructed in Matlab/Simulink and converted to C code using Matlab/Real-Time Workshop. C codes are sent to dSPACE's DS1103 digital signal processor (DSP) via dSPACE/Real-Time Interface software. Voltages with variable frequency and amplitude obtained from SPWM and SHEPWM techniques are applied to an induction motor. Simulation and experimental results are visualized on the designed graphical user interface (GUI). The GUI is developed using dSPACE's ControlDesk software. ß
