“…These definitions are congruent with those recently proposed by others (Hoffmuller et al, 2000;Keitel et al, 1997;Kramer et al, 1997). Our studies derive from epitope mapping of the T-cell receptor b chain using the comprehensive peptide approach of Atassi (Kazim and Atassi, 1980), focusing upon peptides occurring within the sequence of the YT35 b chain (Marchalonis et al, 1994) and homologs of regions of the molecule shown to be either reactive with naturally occurring autoantibodies (Marchalonis et al, 1992b(Marchalonis et al, , 1994 or serving as major epitopes in purposeful immunization (Dedeoglu et al, 1991;Hubbard et al, 1989;Marchalonis et al, 1988Marchalonis et al, , 1993Schluter and Marchalonis, 1986;Schluter et al, 1987). The complete sequence of the variable and constant domains of YT35 is illustrated in Fig.…”

“…The nomenclature for the Vb peptide gene products is essentially that of Mak's group Clark et al, 1995). Although potent xenoantisera can be raised to the b1 peptide (Dedeoglu et al, 1991;Hubbard et al, 1989), we have found it to serve as a good negative control in studies of naturally occurring autoantibodies. The affinity purified human autoantibodies bind best to the cognate Vb8.1 peptide, but appreciable binding is noted to several other peptides including the Vb homologs 9.2 and 23.1.…”
