A Multi-Band Frequency and Pattern Reconfigurable Antenna for Wi-Fi/WiMAX and WLAN Applications : Frequency and Pattern Reconfigurable Antenna

Abstract: This paper reports design and investigations on a planar multi-band frequency-and pattern-reconfigurable antenna by use of PIN diodes. The reconfiguration mechanism is achieved by changing the controlled activation of the slots placed on a circular disk which is fed by Coplanar Waveguide feed. The antenna is symmetrical along the longitudinal axis and consists of seven PIN diodes on each half of the circle cutting the longitudinal axis. A total of 15 PIN diodes are used to make the antenna operate in 7 differe… Show more

“…The bandwidth potential can estimate the obtainable bandwidth given the input impedance of the antenna system [38]. There are different methods to calculate this bandwidth potential; one is with the (1) and ( 2), where R(ω) and X(ω) are the simulated input impedances of the antenna.…”

“…Various methodologies have been employed in the design of reconfigurable antenna systems [15]- [38], Among these, PIN diodes are the most prevalent, utilized in 58% of cases, followed by digital tunable capacitors (DTC) at 25%, and RF MEMS switches at 29%. PIN diodes, due to their ON and OFF states, are more suitable for providing multiband operation rather than a smooth, tunable solution, as is the case with MEMS switches and DTC due to the larger number of states.…”

“…The proposed antenna realizes frequency reconfigurability with the widest relative tuning range (25.6%). In addition, the proposed antenna also realizes pattern diversity: the omnidirectional radiation pattern and the broadside radiation pattern, which was not realized in [ 15 , 16 , 17 , 18 , 19 , 20 , 22 ]. Six varactors are used to reconfigure the antenna.…”

“…Continuous frequency tuning is not achieved. Some work proposed frequency and pattern reconfigurable antennas with continuous frequency tuning capability [ 15 , 16 , 17 , 18 , 19 , 20 ]. Liquid crystal technology was used to tune resonances [ 16 ].…”
