A multimodal approach to dementia prevention: A report from the Cambridge Institute of Public Health

Abstract: IntroductionGlobally, dementia is the most frequent form of degenerative condition in the older adult population and poses a major health burden with high socioeconomic costs. So far, attempts to find pharmacologic interventions that can change the onset or progression of dementia have been largely unsuccessful, prompting a shift to focus on interventions aimed at modifying risk factors that occur throughout the life course.MethodsThe Cognitive Function and Ageing Studies, funded by the Medical Research Counci… Show more

“…Recognition of such a role for CR could result in more appropriate patient selection and interpretation of findings in future clinical trials. Above all, carefully designed studies are required to define the optimal frequency and time spent on specific interventions [37] in order to achieve dementia prevention [38] and ultimately successful aging [39]. …”

“…The score in each digit span task was the series number in the longest series repeated without error in the first or second trial. All cognitive tests have been validated in the Mexican population (Wechsler, 2001, Tulsky and Zhu, 2003, Escobedo and Hollingworth, 2009, Ostrosky-Solís et al, 1999, Sosa et al, 2009). An overall cognitive function score was calculated by averaging the standardized scores of each test.…”

“…Therapies and complementary treatments should be formulated to enhance the multidimensional functioning of older adults and delay the progression from MCI to dementia. Holistic interventions should be developed based on the biopsychosocial model and the person-centered approach (Olanrewaju et al, 2015). These interventions could integrate useful elements from the physical, cognitive, and psycho-behavioral domains.…”
