A Neuron Library for Rapid Realization of Artificial Neural Networks on FPGA: A Case Study of Rössler Chaotic System

Abstract: Artificial neural networks (ANNs) are implemented in hardware when software implementations are inadequate in terms of performance. Implementing an ANN as hardware without using design automation tools is a time consuming process. On the other hand, this process can be automated using pre-designed neurons. Thus, in this work, several artificial neural cells were designed and implemented to form a library of neurons for rapid realization of ANNs on FPGA-based embedded systems. The library contains a total of 60… Show more

“…Then ANN model is implemented on a digital platform by taking the weight and bias values obtained from the training as reference [28]. In ANN-based CO designs, many digital sources have been used, and since they contain non-linear transfer functions, their operating frequencies are generally low [28][29][30][31][32].…”

“…According to Girau , the FPGA represents the most balanced option for the implementation of ANNs from the abovementioned technologies due to their processing speed, the semiconductor area used, the product's total cost, the design time, and implementation reliability. In fact, FPGA technology has rapidly become a computational paradigm of primary interest for research and academic communities involved in the modeling and implementation of ANNs . However, it is surprising to note that, for the most part, it is most common for undergraduate courses to use just personal computers (PCs) and software for teaching students the components and structure of ANNs.…”

“…Chaotic oscillators are expressed by using differential equations and these equations can be modeled with different numerical algorithms. Euler [25], Heun [26], the fourth order Runge Kutta (RK4) [27], and fifth order Runge Kutta Butcher (RK5-Butcher) [28] can be given as an example.…”
