A New Approach for the Fabrication of Strongly Heterogeneous Mixed Self‐Assembled Monolayers

Abstract: Thiol exchange: A new approach to fabricate strongly heterogeneous mixed self‐assembled monolayers (SAMs) is presented. The mixing occurs by the exchange reaction between a one‐component SAM and a suitable second component. The exchange reaction is promoted and precisely tuned by preliminary electron irradiation. As a validity test, mixed aliphatic–aromatic SAMs and templates comprised of active molecules and matrix molecules (see picture) are prepared.

“…10,11,24 When the difference in length of alkyl chain is more than four methylene groups, phase separation is observed. 22,[27][28][29] The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy has, in the case of alkanethiol/ ferrocene alkanethiol mixed SAMs, allowed the differentiation of the binding energies of iron and sulfur, depending on whether the SAMs are prepared by coadsorption or successive adsorptions. In most cases, adsorption at lower temperature favors the coalescence of adsorbates.…”

“…In this way, a place-exchange reaction can be promoted in which part of the molecules are replaced by another component to obtain a mixed film. 49,61,62 Another strategy to realize mixed SAMs is to attach both functional groups of interest to the same molecule. 55,6366 Silien et al .…”

“…Herein we present a method to form gradients of bioresistance down to the micrometer scale using the irradiation‐promoted exchange reaction (IPER) and self‐assembled monolayers (SAMs) as the primary template 1719. We and others have demonstrated in the past that SAMs of thiolates on gold can be affected by either X‐rays,20, 21 UV exposure,22, 23 or electron irradiation,18, 2426 resulting in the appearance of conformational and orientational defects and bond cleavage.…”
