A New Bioactive Complex between Zn(II) and a Fluorescent Symmetrical Benzanthrone Tripod for an Antibacterial Textile

Abstract: A new fluorescent Zn(II) complex of symmetrical tripod form based on a 3-substituted benzanthrone (BT) has been synthesized and characterised. The basic photophysical properties of the new metal complex have been determined. It has been found by fluorescence spectroscopy that, one zinc ion forms a complex with the tripod ligand. The surface morphology of the ligand and its Zn(II) complex has been investigated by the scanning electron microscopy (SEM) technique. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) has been u… Show more

“…The zinc(II) complexes showed comparable activity to the standard chloramphenicol and fluconazole antimicrobial drugs. In 2019, Stataneva et al described a new bioactive zinc(II) complex with a fluorescent symmetrical benzanthrone tripod for applications in antibacterial textiles (86, Figure 15) [188]. Tested against different pathogens, the complex showed the highest activity against B. cereus with a MIC of 450 µg/mL.…”

“…Fabrics with enhanced functionality are currently available for a wide range of applications. They are of great interest in the healthcare field due to their ability to prevent or inhibit the growth of microorganisms, inhibit the formation of biofilms, or impede microbial propagation, thus removing sources of infection ( 10 - 11 ) . Note, however, that there is a gap between scientific knowledge concerning the use of these different fabrics in healthcare services, their potential or ineffectiveness to decrease microbial contamination, and their association with potential applicability.…”
