A New Compact Fluxgate Current Sensor for AC and DC Application

Abstract: This paper presents a compact current sensor for the measurement of ac and dc. The sensor consists of two toroidal magnetic cores. One core works in fluxgate principle to measure dc and low-frequency ac, and the other one is used as a current transformer for higher frequency application. The closed-loop configuration with a magnetic core and feedback winding in the sensor improved the sensitivity of the sensor, eliminated the offset and drift related to temperature, and greatly reduced the error caused by magn… Show more

“…The sensor having higher accuracy and larger measurement range can achieve larger range measurement of the insulation fault and reflect more accurate trend of the system insulation degradation [6], [7]. In recent years, various types of high-accuracy and highbandwidth DC current sensors have been designed in a couple of papers to meet the ever growing demands on measurement [8]- [10], among which, the flux gate sensor was designed to measure the DC leakage current of the system [11]- [13]. In 2009, a research team led by Xu Zeliang of Siemens (China) Co., Ltd. designed a B-type residual current detector based on self-excited oscillation applying magnetic modulation principle.…”

“…However, due to the lower use of a magnetic core to compensate the modulation ripple induced in the primary and secondary windings due to the transformer effect, the obtained accuracy is only about 0.5% in the full scale of ±20 A [ 12 , 13 ].…”
