“…They are therefore well-representative of periglacial environments (FitzPatrick, 1997;Van Vliet-Lanoë, 1998). Although such landforms and associated cryonival processes occur in the Sila uplands under present-day climatic conditions, and even past glacial traces (probably belonging to the Last Glacial Maximum) are present in adjacent sites of the massif (Palmentola et al, 1990), no clear evidence of cryogenic features in terms of diagnostic pedofeatures and structures has been recognised in soils around the Cecita Lake. Silt cappings and coatings, which are often interpreted as indicative of periglacial environments (Romans et al, 1966;FitzPatrick, 1956FitzPatrick, , 1997Kemp, 1998;Van Vliet-Lanoë, 1998), occur mainly in the buried Bw horizons of profile P3, and subordinately in the Bt horizon of P5 as well as in some surface A horizons of the other soils.…”

“…Indeed, at present, these mountains appear to maintain the two main population groups of STER separated from each other. Furthermore, the Pollino mountains maintained some glaciers until the Younger Dryas, 12 800–11 500 years BP (Palmentola, Acquafredda & Fiore, 1990). Thus, the beginning of the exponential phase of demographic growth, as detected by BSP, probably coincided with the crossing of Pollino Massif.…”

“…In higher areas of Basilicata, e.g. Monte Pollino and Monte Sirino, the cold climate caused the formation of small glaciers (Boenzi and Palmentola, 1972;Palmentola et al, 1990;Jaurand, 1994). In our study area the barren landscape probably favoured erosive processes, which produced the slope pediment connecting the hilltops to the T1 terrace.…”
