While this creates challenges for NPO governance and management, little is known about the process or the outcomes of these two developments. We propose a two-dimensional conceptual model to explain how the aforementioned evolutions influence the attitudes and behavior of volunteers, based on psychological contract theory. Mo… Show more

“…We broaden this literature by scrutinizing the effects of ideological PC breach and fulfilment on work effort in a sample of volunteers. This article thus adds to an emergent line of research on volunteers' PCs (Farmer & Fedor, 1999;Nichols, 2012;Nichols & Ojala, 2009;Ralston, Downward, & Lumsdon, 2004;Smith, 2004;Starnes, 2007;Taylor, Darcy, Hoye, & Cuskelly, 2006;Vantilborgh et al, 2011a;Vantilborgh et al, 2011b;Vantilborgh et al, 2012). Our study's contributions are threefold.…”

“…The concept of a psychological contract has been adapted from its usual application to employees to understand volunteering. Examples include: Farmer and Fedor (1999), Kim, et al (2009) Taylor et al (2006), Thompson and Bunderson (2003) and Vantilborgh, et al (2011). A transactional contract focuses on short-term, monetizable exchange of obligation and entitlements (Rousseau, 1995).…”

“…According to Vantilborgh et al (2011), NPOs are becoming more professionalized and in recent decades there have been a wide range of articles analyzing the developments of NPOs (Anderson and Cairncross 2005;Chater 2008;Cnaan and Cascio 1998;Cunningham 1999;Cuskelly and Auld 2000a, b;Cuskelly et al 2006;Dartington 1991;Willis 1991). It is important to note that professionalization introduces negative and positive effects.…”

“…In terms of benefits, it provides NPOs with more consistent resources, greater efficiency and innovation, better targeting of services to customer/user requirements, and improved accountability (Eikenberry and Kluver 2004). However, there is a lack of empirical evidence in many of the cited consequences and the effects of professionalization remains unexplored in many cases (Vantilborgh et al 2011).…”
