A new method for detecting anaerobic threshold by gas exchange

Abstract: Excess CO2 is generated when lactate is increased during exercise because its [H+] is buffered primarily by HCO-3 (22 ml for each meq of lactic acid). We developed a method to detect the anaerobic threshold (AT), using computerized regression analysis of the slopes of the CO2 uptake (VCO2) vs. O2 uptake (VO2) plot, which detects the beginning of the excess CO2 output generated from the buffering of [H+], termed the V-slope method. From incremental exercise tests on 10 subjects, the point of excess CO2 output (… Show more

“…We calculated the ventilatory equivalent of CO 2 or ventilatory efficiency (VE/VCO 2 ) at peak exercise 12, 13. VO 2 at anaerobic threshold was measured by V‐slope method14 or by the inspection of ventilatory equivalents 15. The respiratory exchange ratio was defined as the value of VCO 2 /VO 2 at peak exercise 13.…”

“…The average of the 2 observers was used as the threshold. The V-slope method was used to determine the VT (Beaver et al 1986). The DPBP was determined visually by two segment linear regression analysis, defined as the point at which a clear and sustained increase in the slope of the relationship of the DP and VO 2 commenced.…”
