A new method for high speed, sensitive detection of minimal residual disease

Abstract: Investigations of rare cell types in peripheral blood samples, such as tumor, fetal and endothelial cells, represent an emerging field with several potentially valuable medical applications. Peripheral blood is a particularly attractive body fluid for the detection of rare cells as its collection is minimally invasive and can be repeated throughout the course of the disease. Because the number of rare cells in mononuclear cells can be very low (1 in 10 million), a large number of cells must be quickly screened… Show more

“…To this end, efforts to generate programs that can take full advantage of newer technologies and markers are being reported [82, 83]. An alternative approach to immunophenotypic analysis of MRD, based on high-speed cell imaging scanning technology, was also recently proposed [84]. The initial data indicate that the method has the potential to identify MRD with a very high sensitivity and ensure that the signals detected originate from viable cells.…”

“…Over the next decade, these complementary technologies will play central roles in dissecting the complex interactions of cells [62]. “…Although bCTCs are rare in blood, they play a key role in tumor metastasis (Jacob et al 2007; Hayashi and Yamauchi 2012). Detection of CTCs has been explored as a non-invasive “liquid biopsy” for tumor diagnosis and prognosis (Somlo et al 2011; Das et al 2012; Liu et al 2012). Glycan markers of bCTCs may have unique value in BCa healthcare, especially in the personalized therapy that targets specific immunotypes of BCa.…”
