“…All other chemicals were of the highest purity available. Pinusolide and 15-MPA were isolated from the barks of B. orientalis as previously reported and their purities were higher than 95.0% (Koo et al, 2002).…”

“…The leaves of B. orientalis have been used in Oriental medicine for the treatment of gout, rheumatism, diarrhoea, and chronic tracheitis (Zhu et al, 2004). We have previously shown that the diterpenoids, pinusolide and its derivative, 15-methoxypinosolidic acid (15-MPA), isolated from B. orientalis, protect against glutamate-induced neurotoxicity (Koo et al, 2002). In the present study, we investigated the effect of pinusolide and 15-MPA on apoptosis induced by STS in primary cultures of rat cortical cells and further elucidated the mechanism of their anti-apoptotic effects.…”

“…From the IR, 13 C-and distortionless enhancement by polarization transfer (DEPT) NMR spectra suggested that 1 was a diterpene containing a carboxylic acid, an a,b-unsaturated glactone, and a methyoxyl functionalities. The 1 H-NMR spectral data showed that 1 had the characteristic pattern of a labdane-type diterpene with terminal olefinic protons (d 4.54, 4.87) and two tertiary methyl protons (d 0.58, 1.22).…”

“…The H-11 (d 1.59, 1.76) had correlation with H-20 (d 0.58) determined the configuration of methine proton H-9 to be at a-axial orientation. A compound (elucidated as 7) 13) was isolated from the leaves of Biota orientalis by Koo. The 1 H-, 13 C-NMR and other physical data of that compound and 1 are almost similar.…”
