A new species of Attheyella (Canthosella) from Colombia and redescription of Attheyella (Delachauxiella) freyi (Copepoda: Harpacticoida: Canthocamptidae)

Abstract: Occasional collections of organisms from water bodies of the Andean Region and the Pacific coast of Colombia yieldedtwo species of canthocamptid harpacticoids belonging to the genus Attheyella Brady, 1880. A new species, Attheyella(Canthosella) chocoensis n. sp., inhabiting phytotelmata of the forest at the Pacific Chocó State is described. Attheyella(Delachauxiella) freyi Löffler, 1963, described from Ecuador, was found in a high mountain pond in the southern Colom-bian Andes, and redescribed here. Both speci… Show more

“…In Colombia, studies on the Harpacticoida have been historically sparse but have increased recently (Gaviria and Defaye 2012;Zoppi 2013a, 2013b;Fuentes-Reinés and Gómez 2014;Fuentes-Reinés and Suárez-Morales 2014). In particular, the knowledge about the family Canthocamptidae is still limited in Colombia, and to date only three of the nine genera known from the Neotropical region (Boxshall and Defaye 2008) have been recorded from this country.…”

“…In addition, they can be biogeographically informative due to a high degree of species-level endemism (Boxshall & Defaye 2008). However, the diversity of freshwater harpacticoid copepods is thought to be greatly underestimated (Reid 2001;Webber et al 2010), and previously unknown species are regularly being described (Gaviria & Defaye 2012;Tran & Chang 2012;Fiers & Jocque 2013). Further, several species of non-indigenous harpacticoid copepods have been recognised in different localities globally (Horvath et al 2001;Reid 2001;Duggan 2010), although the degree to which species in this group have invaded new areas is likely to be underappreciated.…”
