A new species of Haplothrips from southern Iran (Thysanoptera, Phlaeothripidae)

Abstract: Haplothrips herajius sp. n. is described from leaves and flowers of a species of Suaeda in the south of Fars Province, Iran. This is the second Iranian species of Haplothrips with the unusual character state of extra setae on the metanotum. Information on variation in color and structure of the new species is provided. The similarities and host plant associations of this new species and Haplothrips kermanensis are discussed,as both are phytophagous on species of Chenopodiaceae.

“…The first two species listed above have already been excluded from the Iranian list by Minaei and Aleosfoor (2013), whilst the third is a misidentification of Haplothrips tritici (Kurdjumov) (Minaei and Mound 2008). There is no evidence of the presence of Haplothrips cerealis in Iran (Minaei and Mound 2010b).…”

“…In particular, Haplothrips kermanensis zur Strassen, 1975 is known to be a specialized phytophage of Haloxylon sp. in Iran (Minaei and Mound, 2008;Minaei and Aleosfoor, 2013), even though it does not occur in galls. Some other species of the genus Haplothrips Amyot et Serville, 1853 are also known as predators (Minaei and Mound, 2008).…”
