A new species of planthopper in the genus Agoo Bahder & Bartlett (Hemiptera: Fulgoroidea: Derbidae) from coconut palm (Cocos nucifera L.) in Jamaica

Abstract: A new species of the genus Agoo Bahder & Bartlett, Agoo beani sp. n. was found associated with coconut (Cocos nucifera L., Arecaceae) in Jamaica. This species was discovered as part of a survey of the Caribbean basin to document planthopper diversity on palms. Cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) and 18S sequence data strongly support placement of the new species in Agoo. The morphological features of Omolicna cocoana Rodriguez-Leon & Hidalgo-Gato from Cuba are reviewed and this species transferred int… Show more

“…However, among the species that we have molecular data from so far, the genus is monophyletic, although the relationships among species remain far from clear. Ongoing survey work in Jamaica for putative vectors of LY has resulted in the discovery of multiple new taxa in the families Derbidae (Bahder et al 2020) and Cixiidae (Myrie et al 2019) from coconut palms. The discovery of Bothriocera harthi sp.…”

“…Recent survey efforts in Jamaica focusing on putative vectors of lethal yellowing (LY) (a fatal phytoplasma infection of palms have resulted in the discovery of multiple new species of planthoppers in the families Cixiidae (Myrie et al 2019 and Derbidae (Bahder et al 2020). The cixiid species Haplaxius crudus Van Duzee (Cixiinae: Oecleini) is a known vector of LY (Howard & Thomas 1980) and was originally described from Jamaica (Van Duzee 1907).…”

“…Recent vector survey work in Jamaica has focused on documenting Cixiidae in the region due to the ability of Haplaxius crudus Van Duzee to transmit the phytoplasma ('Candidatus Phytoplasma palmae') that causes lethal yellowing (LY) in coconut palms (Cocos nucifera L.) (Howard & Thomas 1980) and the discovery of a new species, Oecleus mackaspringi Bahder & Bartlett, 2019 that is a putative vector of LY (Myrie et al 2019). During this survey, palms and surrounding vegetation have been sampled which also led to the discovery of a new species of derbid, Agoo beani Bahder & Bartlett, 2020(Bahder et al 2020.…”
