A new species of Sphaenorhynchus (Anura; Hylidae) from Brazil

Abstract: A new species of Sphaenorhynchus, probably closely related to S. surdus, is described from the states of São Paulo, Paraná, and Santa Catarina in the southeast and south of Brazil. This species, Sphaenorhynchus caramaschii sp. nov., is an intermediate species in size within the genus and is characterized by the absence of external tympanum, by the snout from truncate to slightly mucronate in dorsal view and protruding in lateral view, by the presence of a dark line from the snout to the eye, and mainly by diff… Show more

“…obs.). Sphaenorhynchus dorisae , S. lacteus , S. surdus and S. caramaschii attach their eggs to submerged vegetation (Rodriguez and Duellman, ; Toledo et al., ), whereas S. pauloalvini lays clutches on leaves overhanging water (Bokermann, ). Sphaenorhynchus carneus has been reported to lay clutches on leaves overhanging water (Bokermann, ) or in the water (Crump, ; W. Hödl, pers.…”

“…The vocalization of S. mirim differs from the calls of all other Sphaenorhynchus species by its higher dominant frequency, which is expected as it is the smallest species of the genus. This parameter usually increases Toledo et al (2007) with the decrease of the mass of the vocal cords, which is positively correlated to the overall body size (Martin, 1972). Besides this, the advertisement call of S. mirim can be distinguished from S. caramaschii and S. surdus calls by its shorter duration; from S. palustris by its lower number of pulses/note; from S. prasinus and S. pauloalvini by its lower number of notes.…”
