A new species of Symbiopsocus Li (Psocodea: “Psocoptera”: Psocidae) from Taiwan, China, with a revised checklist and key to species

Abstract: Symbiopsocus yangminus sp. n. is described based on specimens collected from Taiwan, China. We provide an updated checklist and comprehensive geographic distribution of Symbiopsocus, including species from China described in Mecampsis. The genus Symbiopsocus now comprises 20 species from mainland China, two species from Taiwan and one species from Japan. Updated keys to males and females of species from China are provided.

“…The Psocids fauna of several countries in the world was already overview in the recent years (Yoshizawa & Lienhard 2010, Chin et al 2010, Liu et al 2014, Lienhard & Mifsud 2015. Iranian Psocids fauna is still poorly studied and at the initiation of this study, 15 species of Psocoptera are known from Iran (Nikpay 2016, Aghadokht et al 2015, Gol et al 2015, Khandehroo et al 2014, Jarayani et al 2014, Ahadyat & Zangeneh 2007, Jalalizand et al 2005.…”

“…Third, S. ophipcephalus (Li, 1995), S. septangulatus (Li, 2002), and S. dolichosus (Li, 1990) form a species group because the hypandrium has a median tongue-like structure, a dorsal lobe weakly sclerotized and inflated distally, and a ventral lobe with an area of denticles. Lastly, S. bicuris (Li, 1990) and S. yangminus Liu & Liu, 2014 are similar because of the hypandrium with a median tongue-like structure and a pair of spines basally. Future phylogenetic analyses are needed to clarify the interspecific relationships of Symbiopsocus.…”

“…The adults of Symbiopsocus are characterized as follows: wings pale yellow, immaculate in most species; male hypandrium usually symmetrical with two tiers of lobes; phallosome slender, rhomboid; female subgenital plate with V-shaped sclerotized region on posterior lobe. After the original description, 12 species were described by Li (2002Li ( , 2005, Mockford (2003), Yoshizawa (2008), and Liu et al (2011Liu et al ( , 2014. Yoshizawa & Mockford (2012) considered that Mecampsis Enderlein, 1925 is a genus endemic to South America and the Greater Antilles, and they placed 10 Chinese species of Mecampsis, i.e.…”

“…Thus, the lack of knowledge is evident in the alpha taxonomy of Psocidae in the Neotropics, where a high diversity of 'Psocoptera' has been documented recently (González-Obando et al 2011;García Aldrete et al 2012;Casasola-González et al 2013;Román-P. et al 2014;Calderón-Martínez et al 2014;García Aldrete & Silva Neto 2014). This contrasts with the diversity of psocids recorded in other latitudes (e. g. El-Hawagry et al 2013;Liu et al 2014).…”
