A new stochastic ocean physics package and its application to hybrid‐covariance data assimilation

Abstract: Generating optimal perturbations is a key requirement of several data assimilation schemes. Here, we present a newly developed stochastic physics package for ocean models, implemented in the NEMO ocean general circulation model. The package includes three schemes applied simultaneously: stochastically perturbed parametrization tendencies (SPPT), stochastically perturbed parameters (SPP) and stochastic kinetic energy backscatter (SKEB) schemes. The three schemes allow for different temporal and spatial perturba… Show more

“…(2018). The system includes stochastic model perturbations based on the schemes developed by Storto and Andriopoulos (2021). Given our best estimates of the observation errors, we have found the ensemble to be reliable, that is, it has a spread that is representative of the uncertainty in the ensemble mean.…”

“…The stochastic kinetic energy backscatter (SKEB) scheme (Tennant et al ., 2011) adds perturbations to the barotropic streamfunction proportionally to some sinks of energy on small scales in the model, which in a higher resolution model would otherwise have been backscattered to the scales we can resolve. Below we give a brief overview of each of these three schemes, and the reader is referred to Storto and Andriopoulos (2021) for more information.…”

“…A mix of stochastic parametrisation schemes are used, and the strengths of these schemes are tuned so that the ensemble is reliable in most regions (based on our assumptions about the observation‐error statistics). Details of the stochastic parametrisation are described in Storto and Andriopoulos (2021) and Lea et al . (2022).…”

Details of the stochastic parametrisation are described in Storto and Andriopoulos (2021) and Lea et al (2022). The ocean surface is forced by an atmospheric and land-surface ensemble (the global version of the Met Office Global and Regional Ensemble Prediction System, MOGREPS-G: Bowler et al, 2008), which itself features stochastic model perturbations and an ensemble of data assimilations with perturbed observations.…”
