A New Therapeutic Approach in Non-Specific Vaginitis

Abstract: 182 patients suffering from symptomatic, mostly recurrent bacterial vaginitis were treated with SolcoTrichovac. The patients were mostly in the ‘under 25 years’ age group and almost 50% of them were on oral contraceptives. SolcoTrichovac immunotherapy resulted in a marked normalization of vaginal flora, reappearance of normal lactobacilli (71 %) and a drop in the vaginal pH as well as a significant decrease in subjective and objective clinical signs and symptoms (85 and 93%, respecitively).

“…Moreover, in the placebo group a total of 125 separate reinfec tions had to be treated, while in the immu nized group only 67 new infections ap peared. These figures, as far as they can in fact be compared with the earlier studies of Harris [9], Litschgi [14] and Verling [24] and in view of the differences in methodology, confirm the positive experience with this immunization therapy made earlier by these authors and by ourselves [4], It has to be borne in mind that the partners of the treated women were not investigated as to whether they had any transmissible infec tion, such as G. vaginalis, or not. Furthermore, as we had no information on sexual promis cuity, only speculation could be made on the risk of these women becoming re-infected by sexual contact.…”

“…The vaginal pH value was determined, with the aid of a speculum, by means of a pH electrode in the middle third of the vagina [4], For disinfection, the electrode was immersed in 70% ethanol. Calibration was performed immediately before using the elec trode, always with fresh buffer.…”

“…Boos and Riittgers [7], studying 182 patients with non-specific vaginitis, reported relief from symptoms in 162 patients (89%) 4 weeks after the com pletion of the immunization regimen. Harris [8] reported that 95% of his patients with vaginitis (86 out of 90) became free of symptoms 4 weeks after the administration of the 3rd of 3 injections; these results were obtained in a patient population suffering mainly from Gardnerella vaginitis.…”
