A New Type of Lanthanide Complex – Two Divalent Ytterbium Species Assembled from Cation–π Interactions

Abstract: A new divalent ytterbium complex, [{(LPh)YbII(Et2O)(thf)}2(μ‐KI)] {LPh = Ph2Si(NAr)2, Ar = 2,6‐iPr2C6H3} (3), was synthesized by the reaction of [(LPh)YbIIII(thf)2] (2) and an excess of potassium. The bimetallic ytterbium(II) species with bulky diamido ligands are bridged by a KI molecule with cation–π interactions. These two complexes have been fully characterized, particularly by X‐ray crystallography.

“…34 More typical approaches include acid-base reactions of the protonated form of a ligand, H 2 L (proligand), with the RE alkyls, 18 or metathesis reactions of alkali metal (A) salt A 2 [R 0 2 Si(NR) 2 ] with RE halides. 17,[21][22][23][35][36][37][38] Since a salt metathesis approach is the most common, we decided to probe it with potassium and lithium salts A 2 L. To deprotonate the starting proligands, KH and BuLi were used as bases. Deprotonation of H 2 L Dipp with BuLi proceeded fast in hexane or thf/hexane solutions.…”

“…The structural aspects and reduction reactivity of several ate complexes of divalent lanthanides (Sm, Eu, and Yb) with the (Ph 2 Si(NDipp) 2 ) 2À ligand have been reported. [20][21][22][23] Although silanediamido ligands have been established in the coordination chemistry of lanthanides as versatile and robust ones, they have never been investigated as antennas for the sensitization of Ln(III) luminescence. To the best of our knowledge, the only photoluminescence (PL) spectrum has been reported for Eu(II) complex [{K(thf) 2 } 2 Eu{Ph 2 Si(NDipNp) 2 } 2 ], which showed a broad emission band typical of Eu 2+ compounds.…”
