A note on BPMN Analysis. Towards a Taxonomy of Selected Potential Anomalies

Abstract: Abstract-Modeling based on a graphical notation understandable for different specialists has become very popular. Within the area of business processes, the most common one is the Business Process Modeling and Notation (BPMN). BPMN is aimed at all business users who design, analyze, manage and monitor business processes. Most papers in this area focus on making use of the possibilities that BPMN makes available, but there is lack of papers analyzing possible errors and ways of detecting and eliminating them. “…Our spreadsheet-based approach is dedicated to people who are unfamiliar with business process modelling and that is why it is important to transform the created spreadsheet into a BPMN diagram in a simple way. Such a diagram is a correct BPMN model, however, it can still contain some behaviour anomalies if the spreadsheet contains some loops [15]. The proposed set of transformation rules can use a CSV file that can be created from any spreadsheet software.…”

“…As future work, we plan to supplement the patterns with other decision aspects in BP models and extend them by investigating other process languages as well as extensions of the BPMN notation [30]. Furthermore, we plan to evaluate these patterns empirically using real-life process models as well as to check the possible anomalies that these patterns can induce [31].…”

“…Considering designing processes, one can think about models designed manually by business analysts, as well as models generated from other representations such as: natural text description [1], structured text [2], spreadsheets [3], other representations like UML [4], or mining such models from event logs [5]. All such models can suffer from various anomalies [6]- [8]. Some of such anomalies can be avoided by validation models [9], [10] or verification [11] of models.…”
