A Novel CTX-M β-Lactamase (CTX-M-8) in Cefotaxime-Resistant Enterobacteriaceae Isolated in Brazil

Abstract: To estimate the diversity of extended-spectrum ␤-lactamases in Brazil, 18 strains from different species of the family Enterobacteriaceae exhibiting a positive double-disk synergy test were collected by a clinical laboratory from several hospitals in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in 1996 and 1997. Four strains (Proteus mirabilis, Enterobacter cloacae, Enterobacter aerogenes, and Citrobacter amalonaticus) hybridized with a 550-bp CTX-M probe. The P. mirabilis strain produced a CTX-M-2 enzyme. The E. cloacae, E. aerog… Show more

“…Insertion sequences (IS) might be involved in the mobilization of bla CTX-M genes. 21 The bla CTX-M genes have also been associated with ISCR1, which is often found downstream of complex class 1 integrons. 22 CTX-M-2, CTX-M-8 and CTX-M-9 groups were the most frequently detected CTX-M-type enzymes among ESBL-producing Enterobacteriaceae isolates from South American countries.…”

“…This family has become one of the most important families of ESBL enzymes in many countries [28][29][30] . CTX-M ß-lactamases are the predominant type of ESBLs in Europe and South America 29,31 , including Brazil 32 .…”

“…These enzymes are becoming increasingly expressed by many strains of pathogenic bacteria with a potential for dissemination. They compromise the activity of wide-spectrum antibiotics creating major therapeutic difficulties with a significant impact on the outcome of patients [20,21].…”
