A Novel Drug Delivery System: Review on Microspheres

Abstract: Microspheres are multiparticulate drug delivery systems that are designed to deliver drugs to a particular location at a fixed rate. Microspheres are free-flowing powders made up of biodegradable proteins or synthetic polymers with particle sizes ranging from 1 to 1000µm. Benefits of the use of microspheres in fields such as drug delivery, bone tissue manufacturing, and the absorption and desorption of contaminants by regeneration. The study shows the method of planning and measurement of microsphere parameter… Show more

“…Microsphere drug delivery systems are increasingly used in tissue defect repair and regeneration due to their injectability and sustained-release performance [35,36]. However, there are still many problems with traditional systems [37]. For example, the microfluidic method is difficult to achieve in mass production.…”

“…1.3.11.8. Microsphere Based Gels [27][28][29] Microspheres are also known as microparticles which are very small spherical particles within range of 1 µm to 1000 µm. The microspheres consist of biodegradable synthetic polymers or protein and free flowing powder.…”

“…The properties of the polymer significantly affect the site, mechanism and kinetics of drug release from the carrier. Two main mechanisms of drug release from the microspheres have been described: (a) the drug's diffusion and/or dissolution from the swellable or non-swellable polymer matrix, and (b) the drug's diffusion and/or dissolution governed by the erosion or dissolution of the polymer (22)(23)(24)(25)(26). The release of the drug substance from the biodegradable microspheres is a consequence of the gradual decomposition (bioerosion) of the polymer matrix, typically by hydrolysis or enzymatic degradation.…”
