A Novel Edge-to-Cloud-as-a-Service (E2CaaS) Model for Building Software Services in Smart Cities

Abstract: The main goal of a smart city is to enhance the quality of life of its inhabitants by providing services using Information and Communications Technology (ICT) components in a city. ICT components include not only Internet of Things (IoT) data sources spread across the city, but also traditional non-IoT data sources. Managing all ICT components in a smart city can be challenging and results in many complexities. Consequently, there is a need for ICT management architectures. Traditional solutions are often base… Show more

“…It is also of great help for e-commerce processes without the need to invest in infrastructures (restaurants, for example, have given their gastronomic proposals to delivery platforms at home). These cloud solutions are essential to maintain the service when limitations mobility and schedule [ 14 ]. Furthermore, the “operations anywhere” paradigm allows services to be available on any device, computers, tablets, and mobiles, making workers able to carry out their activity from anywhere [ 15 ].…”

“…The TinyML paradigm aims to integrate machine learning within microcontroller units (MCUs) [3]. Large-scale information and communications technology components such as Internet of Things (IoT) are implementing edge-to-cloud architecture through distributed networks [4]. Given that the computing power of edge IoT components is limited due to volume design and cost control, the ultra-low-power concept considers integrated circuit design and energy saving algorithms [5,6].…”

“…Over the years, the concept of smart city has gained attention of the research communities to utilize the technological infrastructure for societies to meet their rapidly growing needs for a high quality of life [1]. Smart cities are expected to transform the way of living by advancing the healthcare [2]; the city management services (e.g., smart traffic, electricity…”

The prevalent beyond 5G (B5G) wireless communications and edge computing technologies aim to accelerate the development of smart cities to brace the hyper-local awareness and intelligence, allowing realtime, and next-generation mobile & commercial applications to ameliorate the streetscapes [1], [3], [7], [8]. This proposition calls for the co-development of technologies such as low-latency and high-speed wireless communications and edge computing.…”
