A novel objective oriented methodology for marine engine–turbocharger matching

Abstract: The matching of the turbocharging system with a marine engine is an essential undertaking due to the turbocharger effects on the engine performance, emissions and response, whilst the limited data availability during the ship design phase renders it challenging. This study aims at developing a novel methodology for the matching of a single turbocharger and multiple turbochargers connected in parallel with marine engines. This methodology employs a compressor parametric modelling tool and a zero-dimensional eng… Show more

“…Subsequently the single-cylinder engine model is set up utilising the formulations and equations described in Section Single-Cylinder Thermodynamics Model Description. The turbocharger maps scaling takes place according to the methodology proposed in Mizythras et al 44 The engine manifolds model setup is performed, followed by expanding the formulation of the single-cylinder engine model to the multi-cylinder engine model as described in Section Multi-Cylinder Thermodynamics Model Description.…”

“…A compressor parametric modeling tool and a zero-dimensional engine model consider the engine operational profile and turbocharger component flow limitations. 92 The main objectives for selecting the turbocharging system include the annual fuel consumption and the engine load diagram upper limit. Effective matching of the turbocharging system reduces engine BSFC and ship annual fuel consumption by 5% and 1.3%-5.3%, respectively.…”

“…This method overcomes the limitations of the manual engine turbocharger matching processes and provides effective turbocharger matching to satisfy the objectives. 92 The complexities of power management of new marine engines equipped with advanced turbocharging and fuel systems are demonstrated by Altosole et al 93 An example for an advanced dual-fuel engine with a hybrid turbocharger system is shown in Figure 29. An analysis of the behavior of a marine dual-fuel engine was completed for distinct turbocharging configurations and fuel modes.…”
