A Novel Passive Wireless Sensor for Concrete Humidity Monitoring

Abstract: This paper presents a passive wireless humidity sensor for concrete monitoring. After discussing the transmission of electromagnetic wave in concrete, a novel architecture of wireless humidity sensor, based on Ultra-High Frequency (UHF) Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology, is proposed for low-power application. The humidity sensor utilizes the top metal layer to form the interdigitated electrodes, which were then filled with polyimide as the humidity sensing layer. The sensor interface converts th… Show more

“…However, restricted by the battery power supply, the working life of a WSN node lasts only two or three years, hence, the cost of the WSN technique is still high for large-scale commercial applications. Recently, owing to the progress of radio frequency identification (RFID) and sensor fabrication technology, online monitoring systems based on RFID sensor tags has been a hot topic [ 15 , 16 , 17 , 18 ]. Compared with existing WSN techniques, the ultra-high frequency RFID sensor tag has a shorter operating range, but it has a simple structure, low power consumption, and can work in passive mode due to its back-scattering mechanism.…”

“…Extending cube tests up to 120 days would usually be of limited value due to the diminishing returns of concrete strength, but the pozzolanic strength gains of fly ash concretes may warrant the extra effort in future work. Other future work could include measuring environmental humidity and internal moisture in the concrete foundation, as demonstrated in laboratory work in [ 51 ]. Given water’s importance in concrete’s hydration reactions, accounting for its impact on in-situ strength development may improve our models of strength development.…”

“…Microstrip antenna has prior performance in penetrating concrete compared to the dipole antenna [ 17 , 18 ]. In conventional microstrip antenna design strategy, the rectangular length is equal to half of its electrical length, resulting in a large tag size.…”
