A Numerical and Experimental Study of Displacement Ventilation in TeIecom Applications

Abstract

The demand for energy-efficient cooling system for use in telecommunications is rapidly increasing. If the total concept is to be successfully optimised, indoor ventilation systems have to be efficient in distributing cool air to equipment that requires cooling. The study showed that displacement air distribution meets the requirements that can be applied to a ventilation distribution unit for telecommunications. To begin with, the air flow in a telecommunications switch was calculated with the help of a CFD simulation, which allowed a flow pattern to be predicted. When the model was prototyped, results showed that the room was divided into two zones, the lower one cool, the upper one warm, which is typical for displacement air distribution systems. However, the displacement unit was designed to produce a cool zone extending up to the topmost-located P CB shelves in the cabinets. This was achieved-even in the most difficult situations-and verified.
