A P&O Based Variable Step Size MPPT Algorithm for Photovoltaic Applications

Abstract: Maximum power point tracking (MPPT) is an indispensable component of the Photovoltaic (PV) systems to maximize efficiency. Perturb and observe (P&O) is one of the prevalent MPPT methods owing to its easier structure for implementation but it suffers from problems of slow tracking and oscillations around the MPP. In this paper, a modified variable step size MPPT algorithm based on P&O method is proposed to obtain maximum power output from the PV system coupled with a boost DC-DC converter. The p… Show more

“…The amount of energy output by solar systems can be optimised using MPPT. Of many methods of achieving the maximum output power, this present study used the perturb-and-observe (P&O) algorithm [26]. The maximum power point (MPP) may be determined by varying the duty cycle of the boost converter and comparing the prior and current levels of power (𝑃) and voltage (𝑉).…”

“…A P and O technique is unable to track the GMPP under PSC and particularly to trap the LMPP. Therefore, the authors in [48] combine P and O with IC to eliminate the disadvantages of both algorithms and enhance the MPPT tracking capability. A core idea of this technique is based on variable step sizes that are taken automatically according to the MPP.…”

“…But the settling time is more. Modified variable step size P&O technique aims to achieve the greatest output power from a solar system that is connected to a boost converter 16 . The approach proposed by the authors successfully improved the time it takes to track and reduced the amount of steady state oscillation near the MPP.…”
