A patient-based questionnaire to assess outcomes of foot surgery: Validation in the context of surgery for hallux valgus

Abstract: The new 16-item MOXFQ has good measurement properties in the context of outcomes assessment of surgery for hallux valgus. Future studies should assess the MOXFQ in the context of surgery for other foot and ankle conditions.

“…Depending on the surgeon, either a transverse or a longitudinal incision was utilized and all patients underwent a partial release from the medial attachment; however, data regarding the extent of release were incomplete. All of these subjects were then contacted by mail and invited to complete 2 patient-reported outcome questionnaires: the Manchester Oxford Foot Questionnaire (MOXFQ) [8][9][10] and the Visual Analog Scale-Foot and Ankle (VAS-FA). 27,34 Both of these are validated scores for various foot and ankle conditions, and both of these scores are split into 3 separate components as well as a combined overall score.…”

“…Then the raw scores are converted to a metric, on a range from 0 to 100, with 100 representing the greatest severity. The MOXFQ has been demonstrated to be reliable and valid for measuring the outcomes of foot surgery and general health [13,14]. We also recorded any injection-related complications, such as itching, urticaria, redness, skin softening and signs of infection around the injection site at each clinical visit.…”

“…Construct validity was assessed through assessing the presence of hypothesized Spearman's rank correlations (q) of the MOXFQ with SF-36 domains based on the literature [5,6]. It was hypothesized a priori that MOXFQ Walking/standing and SF-36 PF subscales should have strong correlation, MOXFQ Walking/standing and SF-36 RP, PAIN subscales should have moderate correlation, MOXFQ Pain and SF-36 PF subscales should have moderate correlation and the MOXFQ Social interaction and SF-36 PF subscales should also have moderate correlation.…”

“…The Manchester-Oxford Foot Questionnaire (MOXFQ) is a practical, reliable, and valid questionnaire, which has good measurement properties in the context of outcomes assessment of surgery for hallux valgus [5,6]. The advantage furnished by the MOXFQ is that it is a recently devised patient-reported outcome measure (PROM)-developed with patients so that it might represent their perspective.…”
