A Photochemical Avenue to Photoluminescent N-Dots and their Upconversion Cell Imaging

Abstract: A photochemical avenue to synthesize nitrogen-rich quantum dots (N-dots) using 2-azido imidazole as the starting material was established for the first time. A production yield of up to 92.7% was obtained. The N-dots were then fully characterized by elemental analysis, IR, XPS, XRD, AFM and TEM. On the basis of the N2 production and in situ IR results, the underlying mechanism for the photochemical formation of N-dots was proposed. These N-dots showed promising optical properties including wavelength-dependent… Show more

“…The Raman spectrum for CNOs shows four characteristic bands at approximately 1342 (D band), 1581 (G band), 2679 and 2925 cm −1 . Two prominent bands, D and G, are attributed to the A 1g vibration mode of the disorder-induced Raman line and the E 2g vibration of sp 2 -hybridized carbon atoms in the ordered graphite structure, respectively 32 . Second-order features between 2600 and 3000 cm −1 are the overtones of fundamental tones due to symmetry breaking 33 .…”

“…The spectral feature at 1626 cm −1 corresponds to the aziridine ring (by which the organic molecule is immobilized on the spherical carbon material). 26 Moreover, in comparison to the organic substrate (4azidobenzonitryl), the absence of a band at 2107 cm −1 (characteristic of the stretching vibration of the -N3 group in organic azide) in the CNO-CN spectrum indicates that all azide groups reacted with the CNO surface to form aziridine bonds (-N<CNO). The trimerization of 2CNPP was confirmed by infrared spectroscopy (Figure 2B).…”

“…Additionally, it displays strong blue photoluminescence and good optical absorption in the UV and near-visible region [60]. Futhermore, CQDs exhibit upconversion photoluminescence properties [19,[61][62][63] and exhibit promising electron transfer properties [64,65]. These optical characteristics of CQDs render them promising candidates as photosensitizers for photocatalytic applications.…”
