A phylogenetic assessment of the polyphyletic nature and intraspecific color polymorphism in the Bactrocera dorsalis complex (Diptera, Tephritidae)

Abstract: The Bactrocera dorsalis complex (Tephritidae) comprises 85 species of fruit flies, including five highly destructive polyphagous fruit pests. Despite significant work on a few key pest species within the complex, little has been published on the majority of non-economic species in the complex, other than basic descriptions and illustrations of single specimens regarded as typical representatives. To elucidate the species relationships within the Bactrocera dorsalis complex, we used 159 sequences from one mitoc… Show more

“…(; for clarity when referencing this synonymization, we use the presynonymization names in all supplementary trees), but otherwise find that most members of this complex are distinct and phylogenetically disparate from B. dorsalis sec . Leblanc, San Jose, Barr, and Rubinoff () and Schutze et al. ().…”

“…The largest and most intesively studied is the Bactrocera dorsalis complex with 88 species; the group that, incidentally, also holds the largest number of pest species. This complex, like most others, is not monophyletic (Leblanc et al 2015b, Virgilio et al 2015, San Jose et al 2018 in press) and there has been synonymy of several significant pest species, such as B. papayae Drew & Hancock, 1994, and B. invadens Drew, Tsuruta & White, 2005 with B. dorsalis (San Jose et al 2013, Schutze et al 2015a, 2015b). To facilitate communication and progress of our understanding of the group, a reliable taxonomic starting point is badly needed and will enable further studies into the taxonomy and systematics of the tribe.…”

“…Species included in the list are ordered alphabetically by genus. We do not indicate subgeneric or species complex ranks because their biological significance is, at present, unclear (Leblanc et al 2015b). We do, however, provide the checklist also in spreadsheet form in supplementary material (S1) where these ranks are included and users can sort the species to their preference.…”

“…Bactroceraadamantea belongs to the (polyphagous) B.dorsalis complex of notoriously difficult to identify species (Leblanc et al 2015c), defined by having a mostly dark scutum, a costal band that does not expand apically, and a black T shaped pattern on the abdomen. It can easily be differentiated from all congeners however by the yellow diamond shaped medial vitta on the scutum (Figure 12B).…”
