A Population‐Based Analysis of Mucoepidermoid Carcinoma of the Oral Cavity

Abstract: Objectives To identify survival outcomes for patients with mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MEC) of the oral cavity and the effects of different prognostic factors on survival. Study Design Retrospective cohort study using a national database. Methods Retrospective, population‐based cohort study of patients in the Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) database who were diagnosed with MEC of the oral cavity from 1973 to 2016. Overall survival (OS) and disease‐specific survival (DSS) were calculated. Result… Show more

“…Existing information on ASC of the salivary gland is mainly based on case reports and small case series, with limited statistical power (12)(13)(14). Thus, an analysis of large databases, such as the SEER database, will provide a more comprehensive and larger sample size cohort of this rare malignancy (16)(17)(18). Therefore, this study used data from 106 patients with ASC of the salivary gland obtained from the SEER database to determine the clinicopathologic characteristics, survival, and prognostic factors associated with OS and DSS of this rare disease.…”

“…The Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database, which includes nine population-based registries from the USA between 1975 and 2015, was used for patient se-lection and data collection ( 7 ). Patients meeting the following criteria were included: a diagnosis of OCC (site codes C003-009, C020-023, C030-039, C040-050, C053-059, and C060-069) ( 19 , 20 ); primary cancer; and an accurate record of surgical interventions. The exclusion criteria were as follows: death certificate or autopsy records, multiple cancers, age <20 years, distant and unknown stage at diagnosis according to the SEER Combined Summary Stage and Historic Stage A variables, unknown or no surgical information, unknown modality of radiation therapy, and survival of <60 months after oral cavity diagnosis ( 7 ).…”

“…MEC is one of the least-researched cancers but a highly prevalent salivary gland malignancy. The disease has relatively favourable prognosis; however, advanced age, advanced stage, and high-grade tumors negatively impact the survival rate [ 129 , 130 ]. Surgery is the common treatment option for the disease.…”
