A Population-Based Nationwide Study of Cruciate Ligament Injury in Sweden, 2001-2009

Abstract: No data have hitherto been published including all patients with CL injury, treated both surgically and nonsurgically. Such baseline epidemiologic data are crucial to be able to validate and judge the generalizability of results from procedure registers and clinical studies.

“…Due to differences in age group categorization between studies it is difficult to make a direct comparison. Nevertheless, this finding is consistent with a study conducted in Sweden which also showed that children aged below 10 years old account for less than 1% of total ACLR 4 . Maybe, this finding can be related with the fact that ACL tear is a rare injury in children 15,16 and generally surgeons prefer a conservative treatment for them due to the open growth plates that may be damaged during ACLR 17 .…”

“…Maybe, this finding can be related with the fact that ACL tear is a rare injury in children 15,16 and generally surgeons prefer a conservative treatment for them due to the open growth plates that may be damaged during ACLR 17 . Surgery between those with 11 to 20 years old presented a significant increase over time; the same findings were seen in Sweden and the U.S. and can be explained by an increased participation in competitive sports by a youth population 4,17 . In our study, people aged between 21 to 40 years accounted for 2/3 of the total ACLR, most likely because of the high activity levels and participation in sports 9,18 .…”

“…In addition to the impact against the knee, there are other types of injuries related to rotation and angulation of the joint (e.g. valgus/varus deformity) (28). These findings corroborate the results of the current study.…”

“…However the true prevalence of the incidence is not known due to lack of population based studies and the fact that some people with knee injuries do not seek treatment. Hospital based studies quote figures which vary from 30 to 81 per 100,000 people 2 . A population based study of 56,659 people by Nordenvall et al showed an overall incidence of cruciate ligament injuries of 78 per 100,000 people 2 .…”
