A Population-Based Study of Hospital Care Costs During 5 Years After Transient Ischemic Attack and Stroke

Abstract: Background and Purpose-Few studies have evaluated long-term costs after stroke onset, with almost no cost data for transient ischemic attack (TIA). We studied hospital costs during the 5 years after TIA or stroke in a population-based study. 595), with more than half of costs ($12 972) being incurred in the first year after the event. After index TIA, the mean censor-adjusted 5-year costs were $18 091 (95% confidence interval, 15 947-20 258). A multivariate analysis showed that event severity, recurrent strok… Show more

“…Such a pattern in costs is consistent with that which has been reported in diseases such as stroke. 151 In addition, men experienced higher hospital costs following a hip fracture than women, even after adjusting for several covariates. This is of concern, as men are more likely than women to be underdiagnosed and have lower treatment uptake rates for osteoporosis before and after a fragility fracture.…”

“…For the costs of stroke, we used recently published estimates of costs based on UK data in the first year after a stroke. The first study reported costs of £8302 (exchange rate 1US$ = £0.64) 102 and the second of £9248, 103 yielding an average of £8775. Finally, patients were assumed to die in the middle of the period between months 1 and 12 after hospitalisation.…”

“…The cost of an intracranial haemorrhage was obtained from Luengo-Fernandez et al, 91 as there would be an initial hospitalisation cost and an ongoing cost for rehabilitation. 91 This study had up to 5 years of follow-up of 729 stroke patients in Oxfordshire, UK.…”
