A predictive model for fracture in human ribs based on in vitro acoustic emission data

Abstract: Purpose The aim of this paper is to propose a fracture model for human ribs based on acoustic emission (AE) data. The accumulation of microcracking until a macroscopic crack is produced can be monitored by AE. The macrocrack propagation causes the loss of the structural integrity of the rib. Methods The AE technique was used in in vitro bending tests of human ribs. The AE data obtained were used to construct a quantitative model that allows an estimation of the failure stress from the signals detected. The mod… Show more

“…Interestingly, the fundamental theorem of extreme value theory (EVT), the Fisher–Tippett–Gnedenko theorem [ 26 ], has its origin in observations of ultimate strength, since the British statistician L. H. C. Tippett working for the British Cotton Industry Research Association developed some of the basic ideas of EVT when he dealt with the problem of textile fiber strength [ 27 , 28 ]. Similarly, EVT considerations seem to explain why in many practical situations the ultimate stress of many ceramic materials is given by a Weibull distribution [ 29 , 30 , 31 ], which is a particular case of GEV. Even in collagenous fabrics, there are theoretical reasons to expect the ultimate stress to conform to a GEV distributiib [ 32 ].…”

“…Recently, some authors have argued that "probabilistic models should be created to incorporate confidence of features noted, surface area impacted, repetition of pattern, etc" [22]. Having this recommendation in mind, probabilistic tables and models have been provided to assess which particular weapon is involved in a specific bone defect as a function of the anatomical thoracic region [31,32]. Additionally, considerations about impact energy and bone mechanical properties are approached as a key question in medico-legal investigations [33].…”

“…Therefore, further work is needed to clarify this point. In addition, the present work studies homogeneous PEBA filaments, but it should be kept in mind that in the formation of macroscopic parts by MEX, small microdefects may appear that influence the final mechanical failure of the part such that an ambitious model applicable to the simulation of PEBA parts must somehow consider the random details of the microstructure [ 40 , 41 ].…”
